The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is an
international organisation which fosters cooperation towards
monetary and financial stability and serves as a bank for
central banks.
The BIS fulfils this mandate by acting as:
- a forum to promote discussion and facilitate
decision-making processes among central banks and within the
international financial community
- a centre for monetary and economic research
- a prime counterparty for central banks in their
financial transactions
- agent or trustee in international financial operations
The BIS operates the Financial Stability
Institute (FSI) jointly with the Basel Committee on
Banking Supervision. The BIS also hosts the secretariats of
the Financial Stability
Forum (FSF), the International Association of
Deposit Insurers (IADI) and the International Association of
Insurance Supervisors (IAIS).
The BIS neither accepts deposits from, nor provides
financial services to, private individuals or corporate
entities.
For more information about the BIS and the committees of
national experts it hosts, see the BIS Profile.
